State and Union Territories of India

India, that is Bharat, Shall be a Union of State (In Article 1 of the Indian Constitution); it was also known by names like Bharatvarsha, Hindustan, Aryavarta and Jambudweep in ancient times, but after the adoption of the constitution, it was known by two names Bharat and India. 

India is a vast country, lying entirely in the northern hemisphere. The main land extends between latitudes 8°4'N to 37°6'N and longitudes 68°7'E to 97°25'E. India is in the northern hemisphere from the latitudinal point of view and in the eastern hemisphere from the longitudinal point of view, whose total area is 32, 87,263 square kilometers. Apart from this, it is the seventh largest country in the world by area.India is the second largest country in the world with a population of approximately 1.21 billion (according to the 2011 census), second only to China in population.India is the largest democracy in the world. India, a union of states, is a Sovereign, Secular and Democratic Republic with a Parliamentary system of Government. After Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019 and Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Act, 2019, India has 28 states and & 8 Union territories in the country.

Description: The ratio of the length and width/height of the flag is 3:2 respectively. It is designed by Pingali Venkayya. The color of the flag is Saffron (At the top, this color represents strength, courage, and sacrifice), White (In the middle, this color represents peace and truth), Green (At the bottom, this color represents fertility, growth, faith, and chivalry), in which there is a white stripe in the middle, in which a dark blue Ashoka Chakra (A 24-spoke wheel in the center of the white band that represents progress and movement. The wheel is based on the wheel in the lion capital in Sarnath created by Mauryan emperor Ashoka.) is made. The National Flag of India in its present form was adapted on 22 July 1947.

Description: The symbol for the Indian rupee is a combination of the Devanagari "र" and the Roman capital “R", it was adopted by the Government of India on 15 July 2010. Conceptualized and designed by Uday Kumar, a Post Graduate in Design from the IIT Bombay. The Indian Rupee (₹) is India’s national currency, governed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Denoted as INR, it is subdivided into 100 paise. Rupee notes feature Mahatma Gandhi’s image and advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting, while coins are available in denominations ranging from ₹1 to ₹20.

Description: It was adopted on 26 January 1950. The state emblem is an adaptation from the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. In the original, there are four lions, standing back to back, mounted on an abacus with a frieze carrying sculptures in high relief of an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull and a lion separated by intervening wheels over a bell-shaped lotus. Carved out of a single block of polished sandstone, the Capital is crowned by the Wheel of the Law (Dharma Chakra).

Description: The national anthem was first sung on 27 December 1911 at the Kolkata (26th) session of the Indian National Congress.The National Anthem is adopted in the Hindi version of ‘Jana-Gana-Mana’, originally composed in Bengali language by Rabindranath Tagore. It was adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the National Anthem on 24 January 1950.It takes 52 seconds to recite the full anthem, which consists of five stanzas, though usually only the first stanza is sung. It is performed at official events, national celebrations, and other significant occasions, symbolizing the country's identity and heritage.

Description: India’s National Song, “Vande Mataram,” was composed in Sanskrit by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and featured in his novel Anandamath in 1882. It was first sung at the 1896 at the Kolkata (12th) session of the Indian National Congress by Rabindranath Tagore. The song’s first two stanzas are recognized as the National Song of India. Description: The national calendar based on the Saka Samvat, with the first month Chaitra and a common year of 365 days, was adopted from 22 March 1957 along with the Gregorian calendar. It is known that the first day of the month of Chaitra usually falls on 22 March and in leap years on 21 March.The Saka Calendar reflects India’s historical and cultural roots, maintaining its connection to traditional timekeeping practices while ensuring uniformity in administrative and civic functions across the nation.

Capital of India: New Delhi- The Foundation of Delhi was laid at the Coronation Durbar of 1911 by King George V as the Capital of British India. It is known that earlier Calcutta was the capital of British India.

Largest City of India: Mumbai- The official name of Mumbai was Bomby till 1995 and in 2008, Mumbai was named and alpha world city.

Official Language: Hindi and English- According to the Indian Constitution, English and Hindi (in Devanagari script) are the two official languages of India. The proposal to use Hindi as an official language was first mooted in the Constituent Assembly in 1949. As per this decidion, English would continue to be used as the official language and Hindi the subsidiary Official Language till 1965. Then under the decidion of the Official Language Amendment Act 1967, English was given the status of official language indefinitely.
