Introduction
The name of Kharavela occupies a distinguished place in the history of Orissa (Kalinga). He was one of the most powerful rulers of ancient India after the Mauryas, and our knowledge about him is primarily derived from the famous Hathigumpha inscription at Udayagiri near Bhubaneswar.
Body
Kharavela belonged to the Chedi dynasty and ruled Kalinga in the 1st century BCE. The Hathigumpha inscription provides a detailed account of his reign, making it one of the most valuable epigraphic sources for reconstructing early Odisha history. It records his military achievements, including successful campaigns against the Satavahanas, Indo-Greeks and Magadhan rulers, restoring the political prestige of Kalinga after the devastation caused by the Mauryan conquest.
Kharavela was also a great patron of Jainism. He supported Jain monks, repaired ancient shrines and brought back the sacred Kalinga Jina idol to its homeland. His reign witnessed prosperity through public works such as irrigation canals, caves for ascetics and encouragement to art and architecture at Udayagiri and Khandagiri.
